The SAU assesses patients who have a confirmed or probable surgical condition. Patients are referred via their GP or are admitted via the Emergency Department. Depending on the clinical condition and / or are needs, the patient will either be assessed in the clinic or admitted to another ward

It facilities enable rapid assessment, diagnosis, stabilisation and / or treatment of the patient’s condition, prior to operation, investigation, transfer or discharge.

The Surgical Assessment Unit offers the services of a mulit-disciplinary team to achieve it’s aim. All members of the staff are expected to participate in evidence based, patient centred care and audit. The patients’ relatives and carers will be consulted with throughout their stay to enable their participation in decisions about treatment and plans of care.
