The Parents’ Room on the Children’s Ward at our hospital has been transformed into a brighter, more comfortable and supportive space for families who need to spend time in hospital while their children receive care.
The new space has been made possible thanks to the partnership between Equans and The Hospital Company.
The project began when Sophie’s Legacy and Tracey Thomas, Matron for Paediatrics approached the team to highlight just how vital the room is for parents. Many families spend days, weeks and sometimes months in the ward and the previous space which has become worn and outdated was in urgent need of improvement to better support families during challenging times.
Tracey Thomas, Matron for Paediatrics said “We are so pleased with the outcome. The room has been completely transformed into a warm, welcoming space for parents. It really is a little haven. Some parents use it to work, others to do some washing, take a moment for themselves, or make something to eat. We’re delighted to be able to offer them a space that allows a brief escape from the hospital environment.”
After learning about the room’s purpose and the difference it could make, Equans consulted colleague John Dymond of The Hospital Company to propose a joint venture. Both organisations generously agreed to fully fund the makeover.
Working closely with Sophie’s Legacy and the ward, a refurbishment plan was developed that included colour palettes, room layout and functional requirements which was delivered by the Equans team. The transformation includes new

breakfast bar with stools
The area has also benefited from additional shelving and re-padded cushions and seating, generously provided free of charge by contractor EPM Upholstery.
