We’re proud to share that we’ve launched a joint Green Plan which brings together the sustainability ambitions of the Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.

This plan builds on the great work we’ve already achieved separately. Now, by working together, planning once and delivering twice, we’ll make our actions more efficient and our impact even greater.

Our Green Plan sets out how we’ll work towards the whole NHS goal of becoming Net Zero by 2045, with the first national milestone, an 80% reduction in emissions from 1990 levels, targeted for 2028.

We’ve already made real progress at our two Trusts since 2022, including:

  • Planting 160 trees
  • Securing £1.2 million for solar panels
  • Upgrading 22,000 lights to LED
  • Installing 23 electric vehicle charging points
  • Building new all-electric facilities such as the Fareham Renal Dialysis Unit and the new Emergency Department at QA Hospital
  • Phasing out the anaesthetic gas Desflurane
  • Introducing reusable caps and headwear in operating theatres
  • Reducing our carbon emissions by 3,300 tonnes

We’ve also introduced practical, everyday changes that make a difference like our walking aid re-use scheme which shows what’s possible when we put sustainability at the heart of how we care for patients.

This new Green Plan focuses on the areas where we can make the biggest difference: energy use in our buildings, sustainable procurement, travel and transport, and the medicines we use. By focusing our efforts, we’ll make sure every action counts.

Mark Orchard, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Financial Officer: “By combining our efforts through a single coordinated Green Plan, we can be more ambitious, more efficient and more effective. Working together allows us to share expertise, plan once and deliver twice and achieve greater impact with the same resources. Our goal is to provide excellent care today while protecting the health and wellbeing of future generations.”

Together, we’re building a greener, healthier future for our patients, staff and communities.
