Specialist clinicians from Queen Alexandra Hospital will be at Portsmouth Comic Con on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 May, helping to raise awareness of type 1 diabetes and support children and families living with the condition.

Working with partners including University Hospital Southampton and DiaFight, the team will showcase a series of educational comic books and interactive games designed to help young people better understand and manage type 1 diabetes.

Living with type 1 diabetes can be challenging for children and their families, particularly beyond clinical care. This initiative aims to support emotional and social understanding through engaging, accessible resources.

The Revolve comic book series, developed with input from clinicians including Dr Partha Kar and Dr Mayank Patel, uses superhero-themed storytelling to explain key aspects of diabetes, from diagnosis to modern technologies such as insulin pumps.

Dr Partha Kar, Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology, at Queen Alexandra Hospital, said:

“It’s been wonderful working with a close friend and colleague Dr Mayank Patel to help co-create these comic books using popular culture to improve awareness of type 1 diabetes as well as a variety of other pertaining topics. We are delighted to have also been given the opportunity to showcase this at the local Pompey Comic Con which is an annual event in the local calendar.”

Visitors can meet the team and learn more about type 1 diabetes and the support available locally.
