Patients and visitors with non-visible disabilities are being supported through the launch of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme, which launches today (Monday 27 April 2026) across our hospital.
The Sunflower is a globally recognised initiative that helps people discreetly indicate they may need additional support, understanding or time. Non-visible disabilities can include a wide range of conditions, such as autism, dementia, mental health conditions, or chronic pain, which may not be immediately apparent to others.
Those who wish to can wear a Sunflower lanyard or badge during their visit. This signals to staff that they may benefit from extra assistance or reasonable adjustments.
Colleagues across our hospital are being encouraged to recognise the Sunflower symbol and respond with patience, understanding and appropriate support.
Laura White, Head of Experience of Care, said: "We know that not all disabilities are visible. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme helps people let us know they might need a bit more time, support, or understanding, so we can respond with care and make their visit easier."
Sunflower lanyards and badges are available from PALS in the Main Atrium at Queen Alexandra Hospital.
