Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU) has joined a group of local organisations in signing the new Portsmouth Clear Air Pledge which outlines a shared commitment to improving air quality and protecting the health of local communities.

The pledge brings together organisations across Portsmouth to support a coordinated approach to tackling air pollution. The core aims of the pledge include reducing sources of pollution, limiting exposure to pollution, and protecting the most vulnerable.

PHU joins Portsmouth City Council, Portsmouth Naval Base and Portsmouth International Port as one of the first organisations to sign up. The pledge is the result of collaborative work led by the Air Quality and Active Travel Board and its partners.

Trevor Mose, Head of Sustainability at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, said: “We are proud to work alongside our partners to improve our environment and protect the most vulnerable in our community. Air quality has a direct impact on the health of the people we care for and we are committed to working together to create a safer, healthier environment for everyone.”

For PHU, the pledge aligns closely with ongoing work to reduce the Trust’s environmental impact, improve sustainability across its sites and support healthier outcomes for patients, staff and the wider community.

The launch of the pledge coincides with Clean Air Night, held on Thursday 22 January, which this year highlights the health risks associated with domestic wood burning. Wood burning releases tiny particles that can damage lung health, and recent research from environmental charity Ricardo suggests that pollution from home burning contributes to new cases of serious conditions including asthma and diabetes.
