Messages for loved ones and keeping in touch

We recognise the impact that a long stay in hospital can have on families and the importance of maintaining strong communication.  Our ward staff are keeping in touch with patients’ next of kin directly and our Voluntary Services team can help pass on personal messages from family and friends.

During your stay in hospital you will meet a number of different members of staff.  All members of staff wear name badges, but if you are not sure who someone is or what they do, please feel free to ask them to introduce themselves and explain what they do.

If you have any questions about your treatment, please ask a doctor or a nurse.

There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved with the Trust, from volunteering to attending our public meetings, our Annual General Meeting or our hospital open day which is held every year.

Video consultations are here to stay

Date: 29 September 2021

Video consultations

At Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU), we are able to offer video consultations for our patients using NHS Attend Anywhere. Since April 2020, we have held over 6,000 consultations, offering quality virtual appointments to help care and provide support for patients and remove barriers that would prevent them from attending.

Video consultations offer a range of benefits to patients, saving time and money and reducing the stress of travelling to appointments. These virtual appointments also help to reduce footfall on the hospital site and the dependency on patient transport services when using video for routine, non-physical follow ups.

Following patient feedback surveys, we found that 93.9 per cent of patients rated their experience of video consultations as ‘very good’ or ‘good.’ Additionally, 93.43 per cent of patients found it easy to access their appointment and 97.06 per cent would use the service again.

Video consultations also benefit our consultants.

Steven Young Min, consultant rheumatologist, said: “A huge component of patient communication is non-verbal and video consultations facilitate this and affords visual clinical assessment.”

Liz Nelson, paediatric epilepsy nurse specialist, also praised the service, adding: “I used video consultations when I was working from home and found it easy to use and better than a phone call as I was able to see the patient and their family.”

We are continuing to use video consultations at PHU, with 253 rooms enabled with video capabilities. A selection of these rooms are equipped with touch screen surfaces, allowing for an interactive experience with patients. This enhances the screen share function with the ability to draw and annotate in real time.

Adam Pearson, IT digital business partner at PHU, said: “We are investing in convenient technology to enhance patient experience and are adapting delivery methods for the challenges we now face.”
