Messages for loved ones and keeping in touch

We recognise the impact that a long stay in hospital can have on families and the importance of maintaining strong communication.  Our ward staff are keeping in touch with patients’ next of kin directly and our Voluntary Services team can help pass on personal messages from family and friends.

Spinnaker Tower joins landmarks across the UK by lighting up pink to support Organ Donation Week

On Saturday (25 September) the Spinnaker Tower lit up pink, joining many other buildings up and down the country to support Organ Donation Week (20 to 26 September).

Although the law around organ donation has changed to an opt-out system for adults in England, Wales and Scotland, your family will still be consulted if organ donation is a possibility.

In the last year at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU), seven people have donated organs that have potentially saved the lives of 18 people.

It’s important to have conversations about organ donation with your family. Even if you are unsure, having a conversation might help you to make up your mind and potentially save the life of person waiting for an organ.

Bethan Thomas, specialist nurse for organ donation at PHU, said: “Families are always involved before organ donation goes ahead, so we encourage everyone in the family, whatever your age, to have a conversation about organ donation, so that when the time comes your family are certain about what you want.

“We need donors from all communities, but a shortage of donors from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups means that members of these groups may wait longer for a transplant. For many patients in need of a transplant the best match will come from a donor from the same ethnic background.”
