A stay in hospital can be a daunting time for anyone whether it is for a short or long time. But having someone with you can help you recover and make you feel more at ease.

Keeping in contact with friends and family is important to patients. It is recognised that a balance is needed between maintaining that contact and allowing for rest and recuperation. In response to feedback from patients, families and carers wards and departments have local guidelines about visiting times so please do check before visiting.

At Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, we are proud to provide expert, compassionate care.

We are here for our local population of about 675,000 residents across Portsmouth and south east Hampshire and care for many people beyond, including providing some tertiary services to a catchment area of more than 2m people.

During your stay in hospital you will meet a number of different members of staff.  All members of staff wear name badges, but if you are not sure who someone is or what they do, please feel free to ask them to introduce themselves and explain what they do. 

If you have any questions about your treatment, please ask a doctor or a nurse.

There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved with the Trust, from volunteering to attending our public meetings, our Annual General Meeting or our hospital open day which is held every year.


Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust shortlisted for 10 HSJ awards

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust (PHT) is delighted to announce that projects and individuals across the organisation have been shortlisted in an incredible 10 categories at this year’s HSJ Awards, recognising their outstanding contribution to healthcare.

The judging panel, made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community, have shortlisted PHT in the following categories, following tough competition from hundreds of excellent applicants:

The following PHT projects and individuals have been selected based on their ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact they have had on patient and staff experience: 

Professor Anoop Chauhan – Clinical Leader of the Year

Professor Anoop Chauhan is Director of Research and Innovation at PHT. With Trusts engaging in research having better patient outcomes, Professor Chauhan has succeeded in his ambitious vision for PHT to excel in increasing research activity. We aim to ensure our patients receive the best possible care and research is an important component of high quality care and service improvement.

A research active respiratory consultant, Professor Chauhan has developed an international reputation and enabled high numbers of patients to take part in locally developed clinical research trials. He has introduced innovations in clinical pathways, developed new models of care and demonstrated a positive impact on disease control, quality of life, healthcare usage and health economic benefits in patients with respiratory conditions.

In the last 10 years we have seen a step change in research activity at PHT, from 1,000 patients recruited in 2008/9 to more than 11,000 patients in 2018/19. The Trust has the highest recruiting respiratory department in the country and in the last four years the majority of recruitment to respiratory trials nationally has come from PHT.


Freedom to Speak Up Organisation Of The Year

The Trust’s ambition was to promote awareness of processes for raising concerns within the Trust and ensure that all staff were encouraged and supported to do so.

A new Freedom To Speak Up (FTSU) Guardian, Jenny Michael, was appointed in 2018. Since then a network of 20 FTSU advocates has been developed with representation across all staff groups and ways for staff to raise concerns have been improved. All new staff are now introduced to FTSU at their induction and there are annual training updates for existing staff.

In the last year the number of cases seen by the Freedom To Speak Up Team has increased significantly to 101, compared to 23 in the previous 15 months.

The Trust Board have actively engaged with FTSU, ensuring it is integral to the organisation, and the team have received a raft of positive feedback from staff.


Driving Efficiency Through Technology - Bedview

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust manages more than 1,200 beds and more than 150,000 admissions a year at Queen Alexandra Hospital. The IT Department developed a hospital bed management system called Bedview in-house, to help improve visibility of patients’ journeys and flow throughout the hospital.

Bedview brings together a range of clinical information for hospital staff, providing real time information on referrals, admissions, patients’ status and bed demand.

It provides clear visibility of hospitals beds and admissions, enhancing safe transfers of patient care, freeing up valuable time for clinicians and improving efficiency.

The Modern Innovative Solutions to Improve Outcomes in Asthma, Breathlessness and COPD (MISSION ABC) project has been nominated in seven award categories, as follows:

  • Acute or Specialist Service Redesign Initiative – London and the South

The Modern Innovative Solutions to Improve Outcomes in Asthma, Breathlessness and COPD (MISSION ABC) project is a multi-disciplinary care model delivering exceptional health outcomes in patients with asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and breathlessness, from a population of 27,853 patients with respiratory symptoms across 10 GP practices in Hampshire.

The project identified 1,050 at risk patients, of which 482 attended a clinic run by a team at their GP surgery. Each patient had their diagnosis reviewed, comorbidities identified, medicines assessed and self-management improved through targeted education.

A further 98 patients who needed investigations had all of their tests and assessments carried out in the same visit.

For 12 months afterwards the team saw remarkable reductions in unscheduled care use, improved disease control and patient experience. The clinic also helped identify and address training and educational needs.
