After suspending visiting earlier in the year, we are now able to offer limited visiting to some wards at the discretion of the nurse in-charge.”

The digital teams behind new projects which have helped transform patient waiting times and experience at a Portsmouth hospital are celebrating after being shortlisted for a prestigious national award.
Three digital projects at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust have been shortlisted at the inaugural HSJ Digital Awards, an event which recognises outstanding contribution to healthcare.
The Maternity Intelligent Automation project has been shortlisted for ‘Improving back-office efficiencies through digital’ award with third party partners PSTG and Digital Workforce and the eConsent digital consent project has been shortlisted for the ‘Empowering patients through digital’ award with technology provider Concentric Health.
The new staff app 'Allocate Loop,' which manages staff annual leave and rosters, has also been shortlisted for the 'Driving Change through Data and Analytics' award.
The maternity project has seen the introduction of digital automation for maternity appointments, referrals, alerting and record management processes – reducing the times for a pregnant woman to receive an appointment date from 6-8 weeks to just 48 hours.
Lynn Woolley, Director of Maternity Services & Midwifery at the Trust, said: “We were getting a high-volume of referrals for crucial appointments and this was having an impact on both safety and patient experience. We increased recruitment, but it had almost no impact.
“Working with digital innovators, clinicians, and administrators to build algorithms, we used automation technologies to read referrals, allocate appointments, update maternity records, and notify pregnant people of their appointments. Automation has been a revelation.”
The eConsent digital consent project has helped patients play an active part in shared decision making over treatment options. The Concentric Health tool allows patients to be active decision makers in their treatment options, providing customised, personal consent to patients. Consent forms include easy-to-understand explanations, enhanced by supporting multimedia Information and also remote access, allowing the patient time to digest and understand the information.
An impressive 314 entries have been received for the HSJ Digital Awards 2023, with 164 projects and individuals making it to the final shortlist (from across 120 organisations). The official awards ceremony will be held later this year (June 22).
Graham Terry, Director of Strategy and Performance at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, said: “This really is wonderful news - the fact we’ve been shortlisted for three awards in the HSJ Digital Awards 2023 will undoubtedly be a huge ‘pat on the back’ for our hard working and deserving teams.
“Our staff always go above and beyond to improve patient outcomes and quality of service and care – and aligning with the HSJ Digital Awards programme really allows us to share our success as well as everything we’ve learnt through implementing our project.
“We hope we might even inspire other colleagues across the UK to pursue and put their ideas and innovations into practice too!”
HSJ editor Alastair McLellan, added: “On behalf of all my colleagues, it gives me great pleasure to congratulate Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust on being shortlisted as a finalist in the awards. All of the applications represent the ‘very best of the NHS’ and often leave our esteemed panel of judges with an impossible choice!
“We’re all very much looking forward to welcoming our finalists to the awards ceremony in June, celebrating their impressive achievements and jointly acknowledging our values of sharing best practice, improving patient outcomes and continuously driving for better service. But we never forget that the award ceremony is not just a celebration within a night, but a platform to recognise the hard work of all our NHS staff, all year round.”
