Messages for loved ones and keeping in touch

We recognise the impact that a long stay in hospital can have on families and the importance of maintaining strong communication.  Our ward staff are keeping in touch with patients’ next of kin directly and our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) can help pass on personal messages from family and friends.

During your stay in hospital you will meet a number of different members of staff.  All members of staff wear name badges, but if you are not sure who someone is or what they do, please feel free to ask them to introduce themselves and explain what they do.

If you have any questions about your treatment, please ask a doctor or a nurse.

There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved with the Trust, from volunteering to attending our public meetings, our Annual General Meeting or our hospital open day which is held every year.

Paediatric emergency department nurse wins Employee of the Month

Date: 29 October 2021

Ensuring our patients are safe is a top priority for every member of staff here at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust and our Employee of the Month winner, Hannah Merritt, is a prime example of going above and beyond.

The paediatric emergency department nurse was nominated by colleague Kerry Gilbert.

Kerry said: “Hannah was working on shift in the paediatric emergency department when a mother and her young girl were brought in by ambulance.

“The mother was confirmed positive for COVID-19 and the child had also tested positive as well. The mother was really unwell and needed admitting for treatment, which meant the child had to wait in the paediatric emergency department until appropriate arrangements could be made for her

“Hannah took considerable care of her while taking care of the practical arrangements.

“I cannot commend Hannah enough for all the time and effort she took to not only meet the child's needs but to constantly act as an advocate to ensure her best interests were met.

“Hannah continually does amazing working with safeguarding our patients in the emergency department and I feel that she should be commended for this.”

Chief executive, Penny Emerit and chief financial officer Mark Orchard visited Hannah to present her with a certificate and to thank her for going that extra mile.

If you have received care from an individual or team and would like to thank them, why not nominate them for Employee and Team of the Month?
