Messages for loved ones and keeping in touch

We recognise the impact that a long stay in hospital can have on families and the importance of maintaining strong communication.  Our ward staff are keeping in touch with patients’ next of kin directly and our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) can help pass on personal messages from family and friends.

During your stay in hospital you will meet a number of different members of staff.  All members of staff wear name badges, but if you are not sure who someone is or what they do, please feel free to ask them to introduce themselves and explain what they do.

If you have any questions about your treatment, please ask a doctor or a nurse.

There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved with the Trust, from volunteering to attending our public meetings, our Annual General Meeting or our hospital open day which is held every year.

Critical Incident stood down at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust

Date: 23 December 2022

The critical incident at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU) is being stepped down today (16.00 hrs, Friday 23 December).

We are able to do this because of the hard work of our colleagues over the last few days. Whilst this is a positive step, our hospital is still incredibly busy and we are seeing a lot of patients coming to our Emergency Department.

One of the most important things our community can do is to support to get your loved one home if the decision has been made that they are ready to be discharged from hospital. We really need your help so that patients can get home from hospital as quickly as possible. This is key in supporting the flow of patients through the hospital and Emergency Department. For more information on how you can help get a loved one home, visit our ‘Ready to Go’ website page.

We also need your help to;

  • Only attend the Emergency Department if you have a life-threatening injury or illness
  • Please use NHS 111 online or visit your local pharmacy if you need medical advice over the Christmas and bank holiday period

Thank you to our partners and community for your continued support during this challenging time and to our staff for their ongoing dedication to our patients.
