Children’s charity brings joy through music to paediatric patients
Young patients at Queen Alexandra Hospital have experienced the joy of music – thanks to a visit from the music therapy charity George’s Rockstars.
Children’s ward patient Riley, 12, enjoyed playing classic rock songs using the electric drums and guitars, alongside six year old Maisie and a small group of patients.
Riley was diagnosed with Leukaemia in late 2020 and frequently stays in the Starfish Ward at Queen Alexandra Hospital. Due to his low immune system, Riley would usually need to stay in his room and have one-to-one music therapy visits. However, this visit he was able to join in and spend time with other children.
Riley’s mum Amanda said: “This was the first time he has been able to take part in a Rock Steady Music group session. Riley loved being able to play and learn all the instruments.”
George’s Rockstars was set up in 2019 in memory of six year old George who enjoyed music therapy whilst being treated at Bristol Children’s Hospital. It provides music therapy in local children’s hospital wards, with the aim to help patients express and process the emotions they are going through.
Riley’s mum Amanda added: “It’s nice to see even when children have to stay in hospital, it doesn’t always have to be a scary experience.”
The music sessions are a fun way to provide some normality to the children and their parents whilst spending time in hospital.
Katie Ball, Rocksteady Music Band Leader said: "I want to say a massive thank you on behalf of Rocksteady for having us in today. All the staff have been so warm and welcoming, and we have truly had the best day! Seeing how happy the children have been as part of a band has been so heart-warming.”
Music school, Rocksteady Music are long-standing supporters of charity George’s Rockstars and kindly donated their time and musicians to host the hospitals first ‘Rocking ward event’.
