Messages for loved ones and keeping in touch

We recognise the impact that a long stay in hospital can have on families and the importance of maintaining strong communication.  Our ward staff are keeping in touch with patients’ next of kin directly and our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) can help pass on personal messages from family and friends.

During your stay in hospital you will meet a number of different members of staff.  All members of staff wear name badges, but if you are not sure who someone is or what they do, please feel free to ask them to introduce themselves and explain what they do. 

If you have any questions about your treatment, please ask a doctor or a nurse.

There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved with the Trust, from volunteering to attending our public meetings, our Annual General Meeting or our hospital open day which is held every year.

Changes to routine blood tests at Queen Alexandra Hospital

Date: 21 April 2020

In order to reduce the number of visitors onto the Queen Alexandra Hospital (QA) site to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, changes are being made to how we carry out blood tests.

From Monday 20 April 2020, outpatient blood tests will only be carried out at QA if the sample needs to be immediately taken to the labs or you are immuno-compromised. Your GP practice will let you know if this applies to you and you will need to book an appointment before attending.

Blood tests that need to be carried out at the hospital will be available from 8am to 2pm Monday to Friday. If you need to have your blood taken at QA, please call 02392 286 759.

For any other blood tests there are a number of clinics locally where you can book an appointment, as follows

Please make sure you attend at your appointment time so that each location can maintain social distancing. Please do not bring anyone else with you unless you need them to attend to support you with your care. Thank you for your understanding at this as we continue to take the necessary steps to help you, your loved ones and individuals and teams safe.

If you are experiencing a high temperature or a new persistent cough please do not attend for your blood test. Instead follow the Government guidelines to self-isolate for seven days. If you live with someone who has symptoms, you'll need to self-isolate for 14 days from the day their symptoms started and please do not attend for your blood test. If your symptoms worsen or you need help, please visit the NHS111 online service.
