Dermatology Research Team

Welcome to the Portsmouth Dermatology Research web page. Here we will introduce you to the department, tell you about our active research program, and explain how you can get involved and find out more.

Dermatology Department

The centre was purpose built to treat all skin diseases from long term conditions, such as Psoriasis and Eczema, to skin cancers – all of which are continuing to increase in numbers. Treatments we offer vary considerably, from prescription medicines applied regularly to the skin, dressings, day treatments and specialized light therapies given within the department, to tablet medications, the newer biological agents and admission to hospital if required.

However some forms of skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma require surgical treatments. These range from small biopsies to large excisions and the more complex Mohs micrographic surgery.

Our Research

Despite the availability of an extensive number of treatment options, many skin conditions still remain a challenge to patients and dermatologists causing distress and understandable frustration for patients.

However, research is a way to improve this and the Portsmouth Dermatology research team are highly committed and enthusiastic in improving and developing new treatments for patients. All dermatology research is very carefully considered to ensure only high quality, ethical research is offered to patients with little potential risk of complications as is possible.

Currently two clinical trials involving new medication for the treatment of Psoriasis and one trial for Basal Cell Carcinomas are in progress.

We are also running three observational studies; one of Hidradenitis Suppurativa and two more for Psoriasis. These are trials observing how routine treatments in common disease are working. They provide vital information on how good new and old treatment options are for patients in the real world.

Our research work ensures Portsmouth Dermatology continues to play an important role in improving the care of patients with skin conditions both now and in the future.

For more information on any research related query, please contact Sonia the dermatology research nurse by calling: 02392 680412

We also encourage you to ask your consultant about research at any appointment you have in the department.
