Messages for loved ones and keeping in touch

We recognise the impact that a long stay in hospital can have on families and the importance of maintaining strong communication.  Our ward staff are keeping in touch with patients’ next of kin directly and our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) can help pass on personal messages from family and friends.

During your stay in hospital you will meet a number of different members of staff.  All members of staff wear name badges, but if you are not sure who someone is or what they do, please feel free to ask them to introduce themselves and explain what they do.

If you have any questions about your treatment, please ask a doctor or a nurse.

There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved with the Trust, from volunteering to attending our public meetings, our Annual General Meeting or our hospital open day which is held every year.

Infection Prevention and Control Level 2 (Essential Skills Handbook Change for 2021/22):

Following crucial learning from the Covid-19 Pandemic it has been agreed that this year all clinical staff are required to undertake a separate e-Learning programme to achieve the Infection Prevention and Control Level 2. The Infection Prevention and Control team expect this to be available by the end of July. If your competency or your staff members' competency is showing red please ignore until this training becomes available.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a great opportunity to learn the knowledge and skills required to work within the NHS at the same time as earning a wage. Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust has employed apprentices in a wide range of roles, both clinical and non-clinical, since 2011, with a significant number progressing to permanent positions within the organisation.

An apprentice may be a newly recruited member of staff, or an existing member of staff undertaking an apprenticeship programme to further develop in their chosen career. To learn more about apprenticeships with Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, click here

Watch the Choose an Apprenticeship video, produced by the National Skills Academy for Health, to learn more about why you should choose an apprenticeship in the NHS.
