Chief Investigators:

Professor Anoop Chauhan, Respiratory Consultant Physician and Director of Research & Innovation

Dr. Chauhan's research and clinical interests are in airways diseases particularly asthma and COPD, and is Chief Investigator on several trials (e.g. RESPECT-Meso http://respect-meso.org, LASER http://lasertrial.co.uk, Markers of Fibrin, and SENSOR) funded by charities and other grant-giving bodies including Asthma UK, British Lung Foundation, SBRI and NIHR-HTA.

He currently supervises the whole Research & Innovation department, as well as three Research Fellows and two Biomedical Scientists studying towards higher degrees.

Professor Pradeep Bhandari, Gastroenterology Consultant

 

Pradeep Bhandari is a gastroenterologist who leads the early gastrointestinal cancer services at Portsmouth. His initial research was related to the role of cyclooxygenase in upper gastrointestinal inflammation and cancer. In 2004, he went to National cancer center in Tokyo on a visiting fellowship and trained in the principles of early cancer diagnosis and endoscopic resection of superficial neoplasia. 

He was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist in Portsmouth in 2005. He developed an early cancer service providing advanced endoscopic diagnosis and resection for upper and lower gastrointestinal neoplasia. This service provides the basis of various research projects and advanced training program apart from providing a tertiary referral service for UK.

Dr Bhandari was appointed as a Professor of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in 2012 and heads the Gastroenterology research at Solent centre for digestive diseases in Portsmouth. His research focus has been around the use of acetic acid in diagnosis of Barrett’s neoplasia, cost-effectiveness of endoscopic interventions, advanced endoscopic resections and endoscopic outcome predictors.

Dr Bhandari has authored and Co-authored several peer reviewed publications, Guidelines, Cochrane reviews and Book chapters. He has lectured at various National and International meetings.  He enjoys watching football and playing Cricket and racquet sports.

Professor Mike Cummings, Diabetes Consultant 

Professor Mike Cummings was appointed as Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology in 1996.He is also Honorary Professor in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Portsmouth University.

His major areas of interest in Diabetes are linked to cardiovascular disease and risks (in particular dyslipidaemia and microalbuminuria), diabetes and pregnancy and erectile dysfunction.  He also has a specialist interest in thyroid lumps (and leads a joint thyroid lump service with Mr. Yiangou) and hypogonadism. His research interests are in endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress and dysglycaemia.

 

Professor Paul Kalra, Consultant Cardiologist

 

Paul Kalra has developed and leads the cardiovascular research programme in Portsmouth and is Honorary Lecturer at National Heart Lung Institute, Imperial College.

Paul was elected as Councillor to the British Society of Heart Failure (BSH) Board in 2009, Treasurer in 2011 and Deputy Chair in 2013. He has been Programme Co-director of the BSH Annual Scientific meeting in 2010 and 2013, and the Training/Revalidation meeting in 2010, 2011 and 2015 and represented the Society in developing UK Transplantation Guidelines.

He has a major research interest in iron deficiency in heart failure and is Chief Investigator for a recently funded large multi-centre UK outcome study evaluating IV iron in patients with chronic heart failure (n=1300), which will start recruiting in late 2015.

 Clinical Outcomes Research Group:

The Portsmouth Clinical Outcomes Research Group was established in September 2012, with the aim of raising the profile of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust (PHT) as a centre of excellence, to undertake collaborative research using routine clinical data and to provide new intelligence on the use of clinical data to improve patient care.
