Training, Research & Development

Training

Portsmouth Medical Physics department is an accredited centre with a long and successful history delivering scientist training. There are essentially two career pathways within Medical Physics: Scientist or Practitioner (also known as technologist). Training may be delivered as part of the national training schemes which are Scientist Training Programme, Practitioner Training Programme, Higher Specialist Scientific training. Alternatively trainees may work in the department and train on the job. The specialisms covered by the department include Radiotherapy Physics, Radiation Safety, Imaging with Ionising Radiation (Nuclear Medicine and X-ray Imaging). Job opportunities are advertised through the www.jobs.nhs.uk website.

For more information on career pathways and training schemes see www.nhscareers.nhs.uk. For more information on the role of physics in medicine see www.ipem.ac.uk.

Department contact Heather White.

Research and development

The Medical Physics department undertakes a variety of research and clinical development, both in-house and in collaboration with other hospital departments, international hospitals, universities, NPL, radiotherapy trials, commercial companies, etc. Several members of staff have undertaken MSc and PhD programs with appropriate research projects.
