Breast Feeding/Infant Feeding

Breastfeeding is recognised as the most normal way to feed babies throughout the world and Portsmouth Hospital NHS Trust supports and values the benefits of breastfeeding.

The Maternity and Neonatal Departments provide evidence based education for their staff in order to support mothers breastfeed, if that is your choice.

Breastmilk provides all the nutrition a baby requires for the first six months of their life and beyond that alongside the introduction of other foods.

Some mothers and  babies require a bit more support to successfully establish breastfeeding and Portsmouth City and Hampshire offer a variety of support groups in Childrens' Centres and other venues to support you on your journey, support is provided by your midwife and maternity support workers, health visitors and breastfeeding support workers, Breastfeeding Network Voluntary peer helpers and supporters, Childrens' Centre staff and nationally recognised voluntary groups.

Information is provided on the Postnatal support page and Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust for Hampshire families.

Parent Education classes are available to you and your partner during your pregnancy, arranged via your midwife.

Baby feeding will be discussed at the second session ‘Life with baby’.

The Infant Feeding Advisors can be contacted on 023 9228 6000 ext 4530

Your midwife will be able to support you on your journey.
