Diabetes & Endocrinology

Welcome to the website of the Portsmouth Diabetes & Endocrine team based at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth

In the last few years there have been considerable changes in many aspects of Diabetes care, as recognised in the King's Fund Report.  These include:  

  • Changes in the delivery of diabetes care Super Six Model of Care
  • Innovative projects such as the  Hypoglycaemia Hotline and STYLe project
  • Innovative Diabetes Inpatient service
  • Newer treatments and technologies used to treat diabetes.
  • Keeping pace with national guidelines such as NSF, Diabetes UK, NICE technology reports etc.

The Portsmouth Diabetes Team have had their hard work recognised by numerous awards nationally over the last few years, namely:

  • Shortlisted for Nursing Times Award 2013 (Young Persons Diabetes service)
  • Shortlisted for BMJ Awards 2013 (Diabetes Team of the Year, Clinical Leadership Team of the Year)
  • Shortlisted for HSJ Awards 2012 in Management of Long Term Conditions
  • Winner, Care Integration Awards, 2012
  • Winner, Quality in Care Award, 2012 (Best Network Initiative)
  • Quality in Care Award, 2011 (Silver Award in NHS Diabetes Team of the Year)
  • Quality in Care Award, 2011 (Bronze Award in Best Emergency/Inpatient Initiative)
  • Winner, HealthCare & Social Awards, 2010

As our department title suggests, we are equally dedicated to providing a high quality Endocrine service and in the last few years, have developed a number of more specialist endocrine services such as:

  • Thyroid service
  • Pituitary service including joint pituitary clinics with neurosurgeons from Wessex Neuro
  • Parathyroid service
  • Endocrine Infertility service
  • Endocrine Day Unit for endocrine testing
