Messages for loved ones and keeping in touch

We recognise the impact that a long stay in hospital can have on families and the importance of maintaining strong communication.  Our ward staff are keeping in touch with patients’ next of kin directly and our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) can help pass on personal messages from family and friends.

During your stay in hospital you will meet a number of different members of staff.  All members of staff wear name badges, but if you are not sure who someone is or what they do, please feel free to ask them to introduce themselves and explain what they do.

If you have any questions about your treatment, please ask a doctor or a nurse.

There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved with the Trust, from volunteering to attending our public meetings, our Annual General Meeting or our hospital open day which is held every year.

Speech and Language Therapy

Last updated: 09 October 2019

The Speech and Language Therapy team aim to provide a patient-centred, safe and efficient service to patients who have speech, language and swallowing needs.

What is a Speech and Language Therapist?

Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) are Allied Health Professionals who specialise in the assessment, management and provision of therapy to people with speech, language and/or swallowing difficulties.

SLTs see patients from birth to end of life, with a wide range of health conditions.

What do Speech and Language Therapists do?

  • Assess and manage swallowing and communication disorders in patients with neurological conditions, head & neck cancer and the elderly population, including people with dementia.
  • Give advice and support patients with communication and/or swallowing disorders to be involved in decisions about their care.
  • Provide in-patient communication and swallowing therapy.
  • Train Portsmouth Hospital staff to facilitate safer mealtimes and create appropriate referrals.
  • Maintain close links with community SLT services so that patients with swallowing difficulties can avoid hospital re: admission and reduce their length of hospital stay.

Who do we work with?

We work with patients with a wide range of medical conditions, including;

  • Stroke
  • Dementia
  • Progressive neurological conditions e.g. Parkinson’s Disease/Motor Neuron Disease
  • Other acute/chronic neurological conditions e.g. Hypoxic brain injuries
