We recognise the impact that a long stay in hospital can have on families and the importance of maintaining strong communication.  Our ward staff are keeping in touch with patients’ next of kin directly and our Voluntary Services team can help pass on personal messages from family and friends.

The Wessex Kidney Centre (WKC) at Queen Alexandra Hospital is a regional renal and transplant centre, looking after more than 1,500 patients on renal replacement therapy (transplant, haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis) and performing around 100 kidney transplants a year.

We are a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, with expertise across a range of subspecialties.

Our renal service consists of three main areas – nephrology (the study of the kidneys), transplantation, and dialysis, providing a service across a number of sites.

We also specialise in the care and treatment of patients with acute, chronic and end stage kidney disease and offer treatments including:

  • Haemodialysis
  • Haemodiafiltration
  • Home therapies - peritoneal dialysis and home haemodialysis
  • Acute therapies - plasma exchange and haemofiltration

Opening hours

Wards G6, G7 and G9: Open 24/7 for patients. Visiting hours are between 2pm and 5pm and 6.30pm and 8pm.

Haemodialysis Unit: 7am to 11.30pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday and from 7am to 6pm Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday .

Renal Day Ward: 7am to 7pm.

Renal Outpatients: 8am to 5pm, Monday to Thursday, and 8am to 4.30pm on Friday.

Renal Phlebotomy Service: 9am to 5pm, Monday to Thursday, and 9am to 1pm on Friday.
