Our Inflammatory Bowel Disease service offers inpatient and outpatient support to people with IBD in Portsmouth and surrounding areas.
Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are two of the main Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.
Both are long-term conditions that involve inflammation of the gut.
Crohn’s Disease can affect any part of the digestive system, from the mouth to the bottom. This inflammation may lead to ulceration, abscesses and strictures in the bowel. There may also be inflammation of the joints, skin and eyes.
Ulcerative Colitis affects the large intestine. As with Crohn’s Disease there may also be inflammation of the joints, skin and eyes.

At present there is no known cause or cure for IBD but research is producing more effective treatments.
Treatments aim to relieve symptoms and prevent them returning and includes specific diets, lifestyle changes, medicines and surgery.

The conditions should not be confused with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a less serious and unrelated condition.
We are open Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm.
Patients are referred by their GP or Consultant.
We are based in the endoscopy department on D Level at Queen Alexandra Hospital, near to lift area 2.
