Messages for loved ones and keeping in touch

We recognise the impact that a long stay in hospital can have on families and the importance of maintaining strong communication.  Our ward staff are keeping in touch with patients’ next of kin directly and our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) can help pass on personal messages from family and friends.

During your stay in hospital you will meet a number of different members of staff.  All members of staff wear name badges, but if you are not sure who someone is or what they do, please feel free to ask them to introduce themselves and explain what they do. 

If you have any questions about your treatment, please ask a doctor or a nurse.

There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved with the Trust, from volunteering to attending our public meetings, our Annual General Meeting or our hospital open day which is held every year.

OCEANO (ED System)

Method of Training: Classroom
Length of Course: Various, dependent on job role 
Pre-Requisites:  None, although keyboard and mouse skills are advisable

Course Description

Oceano is a Casualty Information System brought into the Trust from CSE Healthcare.  It has functionality for tracking a patient’s journey through the Emergency Department and allowing clinical information to be recorded within the system reducing the requirement for paper trail.

Course Objectives - Doctor

This course will enable the student to:

  1. Take responsibility for patient
  2. Enter diagnosis
  3. Record bedside investigations when completed if appropriate
  4. Record observations if appropriate
  5. Record requests for lab investigations if appropriate (NB does not actually send request)
  6. Record treatments given
  7. Record referrals or second opinions
  8. Create and edit forms
  9. Scan and upload documents
  10. Discharge patients

Course Objectives - Nurse

This course will enable the student to:

  1. Identify patient on Tracker
  2. Assign self as nurse (or re-assign)
  3. Check Alerts / Allergies and add if necessary
  4. Triage, either
    • Quick Triage (pain score only)
    • Allocate priority (0-4)  
    • OR...
    • Full Triage
    • Check system allocated priority
  5. Print CAS card
  6. Print labels
  7. Allocate location (bay)
  8. Enter initial diagnosis if appropriate
  9. Record bedside investigations when completed
  10. Record observations (and initiate system re-prioritise if appropriate)
  11. Record requests for lab investigations (NB does not actually send request)
  12. Record treatments given
  13. Record referrals
  14. Create and edit forms
  15. Scan and upload documents
  16. Discharge patients

This course will enable the student to:

  1. Search for patient - amend demographics if necessary (using Patient Centre)
  2. Add new patient - if necessary (using Patient Centre)
  3. Complete all fields
  4. Complete standard processes e.g. Safeguarding checks
  5. Search for patient with PAS Number
  6. Add Attendance 
  7. JCPR+ in notes section if appropriate and Add Alert
  8. Allocate location as Minors Waiting or Paeds Waiting (Majors also have Majors Waiting). NB Can set Priority to ‘U’ if urgent.
  9. View forms
  10. Scan and Upload documents

Course Objectives - Allied HCP

This course will enable the student to:

  1. Search for patient 
  2. View all details for a current or past attendance(s)
  3. Create and view forms
  4. Scan and Upload documents
