Messages for loved ones and keeping in touch

We recognise the impact that a long stay in hospital can have on families and the importance of maintaining strong communication.  Our ward staff are keeping in touch with patients’ next of kin directly and our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) can help pass on personal messages from family and friends.

During your stay in hospital you will meet a number of different members of staff.  All members of staff wear name badges, but if you are not sure who someone is or what they do, please feel free to ask them to introduce themselves and explain what they do. 

If you have any questions about your treatment, please ask a doctor or a nurse.

There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved with the Trust, from volunteering to attending our public meetings, our Annual General Meeting or our hospital open day which is held every year.

Dear colleagues,

On Wednesday we hosted our second Trust wide Quality Review which is now an integral part of our quality governance process. The reviews aim to provide a snapshot assessment of how quality of care is being delivered against the CQC key lines of enquiry; Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well Led. It also provides our staff with an opportunity to demonstrate all of the positive work they have been doing and allow good practice to be celebrated and shared with others across the Trust. Over 55 volunteers took part spanning a broad range of backgrounds including community volunteers, local CCG colleagues, patients and our own staff from a range of clinical and non clinical backgrounds. The review covered almost all of the Trust, including outpatient areas for the first time.

The feedback session was very informative and was great to hear so many colleagues underline what a positive experience it had been. There were some notable improvements in areas which had been previously highlighted as requiring further work, which is testament to everyone’s hard work over the recent months. In the areas visited, staff were found to be welcoming, friendly and responsive to the needs of our patients and carers. Feedback from patients was overwhelmingly positive and it was fantastic to hear some individuals being commended for their personal contributions to delivering excellent care within their services.

The feedback was useful in identifying a small number of areas where further work is required, to sustain some of the improvements we have seen over the past months. This is an important part of our plan to deliver continuous improvements across the Trust and reduce the inconsistencies we have seen in some areas.  

Detailed feedback from the review has already been provided to our Divisional leadership teams and will also be shared with individual wards and departments in the coming days.  All of the information gathered will be used by our governance team to work with Divisions to ensure we prioritise areas for action.  Quality Reviews will become a regular feature of our quality improvement programme over the course of this year with the next date already set for 9 September 2019. I would like to wholeheartedly thank all those who took part on Wednesday and particularly to thank Jane Druce, Deputy Director of Governance and Risk for the significant amount of work her team put into organising the day. I would also encourage anyone who hasn’t participated in any of the reviews to date, to join in the review in September as it is hugely beneficial. On Friday we celebrated International Nurses Day and this years theme was ‘A Voice to lead; health for all’, focusing on the need for nurses around the world to become more vocal in policy development and implementation. I visited the Education centre where many of the activities took place and the event was attended by hundreds of members of staff from across the Trust, from a variety of disciplines. Our nursing teams always put a huge amount of effort and enthusiasm into our celebrations and this year was no exception. Thank you to all those involved in making it such a memorable event.

The celebrations went on into Friday evening at our 2nd Nursing and Midwifery Awards ceremony. The Awards are in their second consecutive year, generously supported by former patient, Mr Paul Thomas. This year there were over 148 nominations across ten categories and it was incredible to hear such powerful stories from our patients and other members of staff, who were keen to recognise the fantastic work of our nurses, midwives and health care support workers. Well done to all who were nominated and congratulations to the winners of each category. This event is in addition to the Pride of Portsmouth Awards for all staff, which takes place later this year.
