Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust offer a range of training fellowships which run alongside our deanery training rotations, offering equivalent training suited to those following a more unconventional training pathway.
This might be the postholders first experience of working in the NHS in our two-year foundation fellowship (having completed their first year of training overseas), and we aim to bring all postholders up to a standard to allow them to compete for national core training posts.
Our core fellowships allow a two-year programme in core level posts, enabling postholders to prepare for specialty applications or access research fellowships at the University of Southampton. We are partners with University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust who have post CCT fellowships in many areas where doctors can sub-specialise prior to applying for a substantive consultant post.
The foundation fellowship is aimed at doctors working at an FY1 or FY2 level and will comprise of four six-month placements. Currently we offer posts in:
Trauma and Orthopaedics
Foundation fellowship doctors will use a paper portfolio and attend the deanery foundation teaching once a month along with the deanery trainees. All trainees will have a supervisor for each placement and attend specialty teaching on the wards.
The core fellowship is aimed at doctors who have already completed their foundation (house officer) jobs and are looking to specialise further. We offer medicine and surgical core fellowships consisting of four six-month placements in their specialised areas. All core fellowship trainees work use a paper portfolio and will have supervision within each post.
We currently offer core fellowship placements in:
Medicine for Older People, Rehabilitation and Stroke
Cancer Care (Haematology and Oncology)
Acute Medical Unit
Short Stay Unit (General Internal Medicine)
Trauma and Orthopaedics
All placements will be provided with an Educational Supervisor who will support them for the full 2 years of appointment.
We provide administrative support for doctors who are required to revalidate during their training at PHT as well as mid year reviews and end of year Trust ARCP/appraisals for all doctors appointed to the Fellowship with Janine Domjan, Programme Lead for the Clinical Fellowship. Janine also organises a Trust Doctor support programme which includes guest speakers and covers topics including Revalidation, “how to stay out of trouble” and portfolio support.
There is on-site accommodation which can be arranged with Residences after appointment.
It is expected that the August 2017 Training Fellowships will be on Terms and Conditions that will be similar to the 2016 Junior Doctor Terms and Conditions. Once these have been ratified by our Doctors and Dentists Negotiating Council, a link will be placed on this page.
