The Wessex Kidney Centre is the only regional specialist service located at Queen Alexandra Hospital. It provides renal services to a population of 2.2million people in the central south coast area. Amongst the services provided are renal medicine, dialysis and kidney transplantation. The unit has the largest home haemodialysis programme in the world which uses the NxStage short frequent home dialysis machine. It is an international authority on this mode of renal replacement therapy. We run seven nurse-led satellite haemodialysis units throughout the region; Basingstoke, Salisbury, Isle of Wight, Totton, Chandlers Ford, Bognor Regis and Milford on Sea. 14 consultant nephrologists work in outreach clinics at 10 neighbouring trusts, bringing their expertise close to our patient’s locality. Our peritoneal dialysis service provides community-based dialysis from the hub at QAH.
We are one of 22 kidney transplant centres in the UK. 90 patients were transplanted in our centre last year, many from living donors. The transplant team comprises 5 surgeons, 4 physicians and a highly-trained team of nurse specialists and transplant coordinators all of whom work closely to deliver highly-rated outcomes. The MDT is committed to striving for excellence and is actively encouraged to attend and to contribute to national and international conferences.
The Wessex Kidney Centre is an academic department of the University of Portsmouth and has a very active research and development programme. We have a dedicated research department which undertakes original ground-breaking research as well as contributing to multicentre clinical trials on the NIHR portfolio.
The renal department is recognised as one of PHTs most important assets and intelligent investment has seen growth in delivery and ambition. A cohesive and motivated workforce intends to make the Wessex Renal Centre recognised as a centre of national and international excellence.
