Messages for loved ones and keeping in touch

We recognise the impact that a long stay in hospital can have on families and the importance of maintaining strong communication.  Our ward staff are keeping in touch with patients’ next of kin directly and our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) can help pass on personal messages from family and friends.

During your stay in hospital you will meet a number of different members of staff.  All members of staff wear name badges, but if you are not sure who someone is or what they do, please feel free to ask them to introduce themselves and explain what they do.

If you have any questions about your treatment, please ask a doctor or a nurse.

There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved with the Trust, from volunteering to attending our public meetings, our Annual General Meeting or our hospital open day which is held every year.

What Sets Us Apart

Last updated: 26 April 2022

We work together to provide the best possible care for each and every one of our patients, and there are a number of areas where our services are exemplary:

Supporting kidney patients

  • We are home to the Wessex Kidney Centre, which is the third largest renal unit in England, providing a comprehensive renal service to about 2.4 million adults across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and the adjacent parts of Wiltshire, West Sussex, Berkshire and Surrey.
  • We look after over 1,500 patients who need dialysis or a kidney transplant. We have one of the highest rates of home haemodialysis in the UK at 11% compared to 4.2% nationally so more of our patient can stay independent and enjoy a better quality of life.
  • We have contributed 66 altruistic kidney donations since December 2008, which means these people have become living donors to people they have never met who are in need of a transplant – about 10% of the total nationally.

Using new technology

  • We were the first Trust in the UK to provide robot-assisted knee replacement surgery on the NHS to reduce pain and recovery times.

Clinical research

  • We are ranked second among all large acute Trusts in England for research recruitment, and the top acute Trust in the country when the complexity of our research projects is considered using criteria set by the National Institute of Healthcare Research.

Cancer Centre

  • We are a designated cancer centre serving a population of approximately 800,000 within southern Hampshire. The centre is part of the Central and South Coast Cancer Network.
