Portsmouth Hospital launches new vision for the future
05 July 2018

Today (5 July), Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust has launched its strategy for the future of the organisation over the next five years. Tackling some of the hospital’s longstanding challenges, supporting and developing staff, and a focus on research and development are all key priorities.

Launching the strategy on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the NHS, Chief Executive Mark Cubbon said;

“I’m delighted to be marking the 70th anniversary of the NHS by presenting our vision for the future. Our strategy sets out how we will make improvements where they are needed, as well as build on the many areas of excellence of which we are immensely proud. It demonstrates the positive difference we will be making to our hospital over the next five years.

Our people are our greatest asset and remain at the heart of all we do. Investing in them and developing their potential is a central part of the commitments we are making. The strategy will help staff to understand what our vision is for the organisation and what we need to do, working together, to achieve it.”

Within the strategy the Trust commits itself to doing a number of things to deliver real change for patients and staff, including;

  • Getting the basics right and delivering high quality care across all services
  • Supporting the development of our people
  • Strengthening our relationship with colleagues in the army, navy and airforce who contribute a huge amount to the organisation and are pivotal to its future.
  • Tackling some of the Trust’s longstanding challenges such as urgent care and improving the patient experience in the Emergency Department
  • Building on the Trust’s expertise in research and development to support improvement and innovation
  • Living within our means and ensuring services are financially sustainable
  • Working with partners to offer joined up care to patients with pathways of care focused around the patient rather than around organisations

The strategy was developed over five months, working closely with staff, patients, partners and members of the local community. The Trust hosted meetings with patient groups, invited feedback at a series of public meetings and sought input via social media in the form of an interactive Facebook Live session.

As well as outlining what the Trust will focus on over the next five years, the strategy recognises the wider contribution it has to make.

Mark Cubbon continued;

“The NHS is increasingly having to do more with less and working with colleagues across the NHS and social care is more important than ever if we are to deliver truly joined up care for our patients. Our strategy makes clear that we need to play a full part in this and we look forward to realising this for the benefit of all our patients.”

Implementation of the strategy will be overseen by the Trust Board and ongoing feedback will be sought from patient groups, partners and the local community.
