Celebrating our apprentices
08 March 2019

This week is National Apprenticeship Week and to celebrate we are highlighting the amazing work of some of our apprentices we have here at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust (PHT).

Joseph Wagstaff is an apprentice in the Clinical Engineering Department who is responsible for delivering, collecting, and repairing equipment. Joe thrives in his role as a Support Assistant in the Medical Equipment Library (MEL) as he enjoys the hands-on role and being involved in the services the Trust provides for our patients.

Joe explains: “I deal with syringe drivers, IV fluid pumps, feed pumps, thermometry and blood pressure monitors. We repair these devices by replacing circuitry, spare parts, updating software or general maintenance.”

Before coming to PHT, Joe studied IT systems and Art & Design at college. After completing his studies at college, Joe knew he wanted to get into the working world so decided to take up an apprenticeship with HTP Apprentice Provider.

Joe said: “An apprenticeship enables you to get in the working environment sooner and it’s far more beneficial as it provides qualifications you may not already have.”

Looking back over his past eight months at the Trust, Joe is pleased to see how far he has come and looks forward to taking up a permanent position in the department.

“I am really pleased I took up this apprenticeship as it has really benefitted my development and steered me into the right career path.” Joe added. “I finish my apprenticeship in September and I am looking forward to taking up a solid position within the department and progressing even further.”
