We had a very busy start to the week with a high volume of patients attending, and requiring admission via our Emergency Department (ED). At the peak of this pressure, throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, we saw more patients waiting longer than we would like within the department and some experiencing delays, when arriving via ambulance. Throughout this period, the level of teamwork across the Trust was nothing short of exemplary and I’d like to thank everyone involved for their commitment to our patients and their continuing hard work. We went into the weekend in a much better position, following the support from our colleagues across the Portsmouth and SE Hampshire health and care system, to facilitate a higher number of discharges of patients awaiting ongoing care in the community.
Despite having such a busy week, the ED team have been trialling a new project in the Majors B area of the department, created specifically for ambulant patients. The Quality Improvement project has only been going for 11 days and is already receiving positive reviews from staff and patients, while seeing an additional 10% throughput through the area. Well done to all involved.
I was delighted to see the The News supporting the launch of Athena, which is a pilot scheme being offered to women in Portsmouth, aiming to improve the continuity of care throughout their pregnancy and ultimately, the outcomes for Mums and their babies. This is part of a national drive to provide services in this way and requires considerable changes to the working patterns for our Midwifery teams, in particular. It’s great to see the team working at the Portsmouth Maternity Centre at St Mary’s, leading the way on this important initiative and I look forward to hearing how the pilot is evaluated in the future.
Many of you will have heard about our “Working Together” campaign celebrating our Trust values, generating conversations about why they’re important and how they make a difference to the care we provide to our patients. For the month of August we have focused on our value of working together as one team, and as a way of celebrating its importance, a “Wonderwall” is on display on C Level near the North Entrance.
I only learned what a Wonderwall was very recently, but it’s a way for patients, visitors and colleagues to leave messages of thanks to individuals and teams for the valuable contribution they make, while working together as one team. If you haven’t seen it yet, do take a moment to stop by and read some of the dozens of messages that have already been left for many members of the PHT team, recognising the difference made to our patients every day. Finally, this week I had the pleasure of taking part in the judging process for the annual Pride of Portsmouth Awards. More than 360 nominations were received across the 10 categories for the awards and I continue to be amazed at the lengths that both individuals and teams go to every day at PHT, in an attempt to provide the very best care to every one of our patients.
The awards are a great opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of our colleagues and teams right across the Trust. We will be showcasing best practice and acknowledging staff who live and breathe our values, and will also be celebrating leadership, apprentices, our volunteers and fundraisers. Details of shortlisted nominees will be announced shortly and I look forward to the event itself at Portsmouth Guildhall on Monday 18 November.
