Chief Executive Weekly Message - Friday 14 December 2018
18 December 2018

Dear colleagues,

This morning we hosted our latest Executive Roadshow which was focused on the subject of IT. Whilst we have some fantastic technology, some developed by our own teams, the experience of using our IT causes some very real frustrations on a day to day basis. Over 50 members of staff attended, and it was a great opportunity to answer questions, get your feedback and showcase clinical systems that are having a positive impact for our staff and patients. You told us that IT improvements were critical to addressing the challenges of the Trust, and that you are particularly interested in how IT can help our staff to do more digitally.

If you couldn’t attend this morning’s session we are running three drop in events for staff to give us your ideas on what you think our priorities for IT should be. The dates and locations for each of these sessions are below so please come along if you can.

  • Tuesday 18th December, 4pm, Room 10, Education Centre
  • Monday 14th January, 11.30am, Rooms 1 & 2, Education Centre
  • Wednesday 16th January, 3.30pm, Rooms 11 & 12, Education Centre

As some of you may be aware our Head of IT, Chris Tite retired from the Trust today after over 30 years in the NHS and I would like to thank him for all that he has done. Chris will be succeeded by Phil Kenny who will be taking over the role and leading the development and roll out of our IT strategy alongside the executive leadership provided by Penny Emerit, Director of Strategy and Performance.

On Wednesday I was pleased to welcome Michael MacDonnell to QA as part of a wider visit to NHS organisations across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Michael is a Director at NHS England responsible for overseeing integration and we spoke about some of the recent work we have been doing with our partners in the community to improve flow and timeliness of discharge for our patients. The feedback was very positive and he commended the positive relationships we have with our colleagues across Portsmouth and South East Hampshire.

Yesterday I met with Air Commodore Walton and Wing Commander Redman from the Joint Hospitals Group (formerly the Defence Medical Group) to discuss the Trust’s relationship with all three armed forces. Our relationship with colleagues in the military is an extremely important one and our intention to grow and develop this is reflected in our strategy for the next five years. We had an extremely positive discussion and I am enthusiastic about the opportunities we have to work even more closely together.

Despite us being in the middle of December, and following a very busy start to the week, ‘patient flow’ across the hospital continues to improve as we head into the weekend. Today the number of patients who were ready for discharge was 146 and the average length of time they have waited for discharge is at the lowest it has been for years. While we all know we have not yet seen the peak of the winter period, it is great to see the impact of the plans we have put in place in preparation. Throughout next week there will be a big focus on discharges across the Trust, to ensure as may patients as possible are discharged home, or into the community, as soon as they are able. We have further initiatives to come on line in the community and on the QA site over the coming weeks to strengthen our resilience even further.

Finally, if you are reading this and have not yet had your flu jab, I would encourage you to please do so as soon as possible as the flu season will be in full swing before we know it.

Thank you for all that you do, day-in day-out, for our patients and their loved ones.

Have a great weekend.
