Preparing for Treatment
After you have attended your outpatient appointment you will be given a date to come into hospital. You will then be asked to complete a health screening questionnaire and/or attend the Pre-Operative Assessment (POA) department before you go home.
A POA can be a one-stop appointment, an in-person appointment or a telephone assessment if appropriate. At the appointment the POA nurses will ask you questions about your medical history and your home-life situation. They may need to carry out some blood tests, swabs & heart tracing. This can take from 20 mins to one hour. The patient will be given verbal & written instruction about their admission, where to report to, when to starve from, advice about their operation and when to take their normal medication.
There are two routes of admission:
-
inpatient where you stay for a period of time
-
day case where you have surgery and go home on the same day.
The POA nurses will assess your suitability for day surgery but if you do not meet the criteria, they will arrange for you to become an in-patient admission.
It is advisable to let your relatives know that you are having surgery and to arrange for someone to bring you into hospital, drop you off and collect you as needed. To find out how to get to the hospital and where to park visit the find us pages. For information about patient transport click here
It is important to remember that for Day Surgery patients, the relatives will be asked to leave the department after they have dropped the patient off. This is due to lack of space and the large volume of patients coming in. The Day Surgery Unit is not a suitable place for children so please avoid bringing them where possible. All relatives will be contacted when the patient is ready to go home.
If you are unwell before your operation, please ring the Day Surgical Unit for advice on 023 9228 6026. If you are found to be too unwell, your operation maybe postponed.

No cause for concern Fire Service exercise at Queen Alexandra Hospital on Tuesday 22 May
Staff at Queen Alexandra Hospital would like to make members of the public aware that a Hampshire Fire and Rescue service mass decontamination unit will attend our site for an exercise due to take place on Tuesday 22 May. There will be no live “casualties.”
