Hospital Staff

During your stay in hospital you will meet a number of different members of staff.  All members of staff wear name badges, but if you are not sure who someone is or what they do, please feel free to ask them to introduce themselves and explain what they do.  If you have any questions about your treatment, please ask a doctor or a nurse.

 
Doctors

While in hospital, you will be under the care of a consultant whose name will be displayed on your bed head.  He or she is in charge of a team of doctors, one of whom will look after you each day and pay regular visits to check on your progress.
 

Nurses

The ward sister or charge nurse runs the ward and manages a team of nurses, one of whom will look after you each day, supported by healthcare assistants. 
 

Modern Matrons (Senior Nurses)

Modern matrons support ward sisters and charge nurses, helping to improve nursing care.  They provide clinical and management expertise and work closely with patients and their carers to involve them in the future of the nursing service.  Should you wish to talk to a modern matron please ask a ward sister or charge nurse. 
 

Students 

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital.  We appreciate patients' co-operation in helping us to train future healthcare professionals and you may be asked if a student may take part in your care.  You do not have to allow this.  If you are not happy for students to be present please tell a member of the ward staff.
