Phlebotomy -  who to contact if you require a blood test

Parents who need to arrange a blood test for a child aged 16 or under please contact the Paediatric Department at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Monday to Friday between 9am and 1pm and 2pm and 4pm on 023 9228 6000 ext 3336.

Update: New phlebotomy service for young adults

A Young Adult Phlebotomy Service for children aged 14 upwards will be provided by the Trust from Monday 12 September 2011.

These tests will be carried out on an appointment only basis and can be arranged by contacting one of the following clinics:

When making an appointment please specify that the appointment is for a young adult and a double appointment can be booked.

Young adults, who have a needle phobia or are a patient with learning difficulties, should be referred to the Paediatric Department at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham. Telephone 02392 286000 ext 4377.

Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Information for patients living in Portsmouth

Patients living in Portsmouth should contact the booking line at St Marys Hospital on 023 9268 0275 from Monday to Friday between 7am and 7pm; and on Saturday and Sunday from 9am and 5pm to arrange a blood test. This is an appointments system only. Blood test appointments will be available from 8am to 4.45pm Monday to Fridays.

**UPDATE**
St Marys Hospital Phlebotomy Clinic now opens from 7am to offer patients an earlier appointment time. The clinic will continue to open from Monday to Friday until 4.45pm excluding Bank Holidays.

Patients will still need to make their appointment via the dedicated telephone line, which is opened from 7am until 7pm, Monday to Friday and from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. The dedicated telephone number is 023 9268 0275.

We hope the new opening time will offer patient more flexibility when making appointments.

The Cosham Phlebotomy Clinic offers a walk-in service from Monday to Friday between 8am and 12.15pm. This is situated at the back of Everett’s Chemist in Wooten Street, Cosham.

There are no walk-in clinics at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham or Gosport War Memorial Hospital for GP referrals. All GP referrals should either make an appointment at St Marys Hospital or go to the Cosham Phlebotomy walk-in clinic.

To ensure a timely service to all patients at QAH it is important that only the following patients attend the Phlebotomy Department on Level C:

1) Patients who have attended an outpatient clinic on that day
2) Chemotherapy patients
3) Pre-operative assessment patients

For all other phlebotomy patients please make use of the Cosham Phlebotomy Clinic or St Mary’s Hospital

Information for patients living in Fareham

The Gudgeheath Lane GP surgery and Highlands Road GP surgery carry out blood tests for registered patients. To make an appointment at Gudgeheath Lane please call 01329 280887 from Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 5pm. To make an appointment at Highlands Road please contact 0844 477 8939.

To have a blood test at Fareham Health Centre please contact 01329 282911 from Monday to Friday between 8am and 5.30pm. This is an appointment system only

To have a blood test at the new Community Hospital in Park Gate, Fareham please call 01489 587415 from Monday to Friday between 8.30am to 4pm. This is an appointment system only for Fareham patients.

Patients who are registered at Bridgemary Medical Centre, Rowner Health Centre or Brune Medical Centre, are able to have a blood test at Brune Medical Centre. To arrange an appointment please call 023 9279 4169 from Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm.

Patients who are registered at Forton Road Medical Centre or Brockhurst Medical Centre are able to have a blood test at Forton Road Medical Centre. To book an appointment please call 023 9258 3333 from Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 5.30pm.

Patients who are registered at Bury Road Surgery or Gosport Medical Centre are able to have a blood test at Gosport Medical Centre. To book an appointment please call 023 9258 3302 from Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm.

Patients who are registered at Manor Way Surgery or Lee On The Solent Practice are able to have a blood test at Lee On The Solent Medical Practice. To arrange an appointment please call 023 9255 0220 from Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 5pm.

Patients who are registered at Stoke Road Medical Centre or Waterside Medical Centre are able to have blood tests at Waterside Medical Centre. To arrange an appointment please call 023 9258 3344 from Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm.

Stubbington Medical Practice is able to provide a blood test facility for its registered patients. Please call 01329 664231 from Monday to Friday between 8.30am to 5pm to book an appointment.

Information for patients living in Petersfield, Havant and East Hampshire

Patients living in the Petersfield, Havant, East Hampshire areas should contact Petersfield Hospital on 01730 266264 between 8am and 5pm to arrange a blood test. This is an appointments system only.

*The above clinics, hospitals and GP practices do not provide a blood test service on weekends or bank holidays.

Additional information

All GP Practices and St Marys Hospital and the Community Hospital in Park Gate Fareham have slots available for urgent blood test where required.

If you require a Glucose Tolerance Test please Queen Alexandra Hospital on 023 9228 6000 ext 1758 from Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm for an appointment.

Patients on Warfarin are asked to attend for the blood test before midday so results are available on the same day and dose changes posted out when necessary.

Patients attending for a fasting blood test are required not to have eaten. However patients may drink clear fluids only for example, water, black tea or coffee, for a minimum of 12 hours before the test.

Staff at Queen Alexandra Hospital would like to make members of the public aware that a Hampshire Fire and Rescue service mass decontamination unit will attend our site for an exercise due to take place on Tuesday 22 May. There will be no live “casualties.”
