Welcome to the new Queen Alexandra hospital

The new Queen Alexandra Hospital opened in 2009

The state-of-the-art Queen Alexandra Hospital opened on 15 June 2009, after ten years of planning, offering patient facilities that are amongst the best in Europe.

Chief Executive Ursula Ward said: “We will continue to work hard to deliver the highest possible care in what is likely to be one of the most up to date hospitals in the country and believe this will enable us to achieve our vision to provide the best care, by the best people in the best hospital.”

The hospital saw the coming together of the acute services from the original Queen Alexandra Hospital, St Mary's Hospital, Portsmouth, and The Royal Hospital Haslar, Gosport, onto one site.  To accommodate this, Queen Alexandra Hospital is more than double its previous size with about 1200 beds across the new and existing parts of the hospital.

Queen Alexandra Hospital has:

  • 27 operating theatres
  • four Linear Accelerators
  • two MRI scanners
  • three CT scanners
  • 6000 staff
  • 880 patient and visitor car parking spaces

While the acute services have been relocated to Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust continues to provide outpatient facilities on Portsea Island at St Mary’s Hospital and also at Gosport War Memorial Hospital in Gosport, alongside other services provided by our Primary Care Trust NHS partners.
