Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital trusts in the country. We provide a full range of services to more than 650,000 people across Portsmouth, South East Hampshire and West Sussex. Most services are provided at Queen Alexandra Hospital but we also offer a range of outpatient and diagnostic facilities closer to patients’ homes. We handle around 130,000 Emergency Department admissions a year and have the busiest maternity department on the South Coast. The Trust employs around 6,000 staff and is the second largest employer in Portsmouth.

The coming year will prove to be one of change for the whole of the NHS. The Health and Social Care Act 2012 set out the new NHS structure from 1 April 2013 with the responsibility for commissioning transferring to Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), run by General Practitioners.
The Act also intends that all NHS Trusts become a Foundation Trust. Foundation Trusts remain part of the NHS, but they have more independence in how they run their services, and are much more accountable to their local communities.
