NHS initiatives strive to achieve improved quality of care and patient experience using a variety of similar methodologies. These are often implemented in clinical areas in isolation of each other. In 2010, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust (PHT) was inspired to re-design its own quality improvement programme to further improve safe quality care.
“Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust has taken a pragmatic approach; rather than attempting to implement different improvement initiatives which include The Productive Ward: Releasing time to careTM, High Impact ActionsTM, Essence of CareTM, Energise for ExcellenceTM and the trusts own values. They have taken The Productive Ward as its core framework and ‘bundled together’ relevant components from other improvement programmes. It has created a tailored programme that links elements of the different initiatives, with the aim of delivering the very best experience for patients”
(Lynn Callard, national lead for The Productive Care QIPP work stream NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, 2011)
This bundle approach provides a collation of recognised standards and benchmarks in an evidence based way. For example when a clinical team examines their meals process, they will be working towards achieving The Productive Ward ‘Meals’ module as well as outcomes from the ‘Keeping Nourished – Getting Better’ High Impact ActionTM and the ‘Food and Drink’ Essence of CareTM benchmark. PHT developed this programme through enhancing The Productive Ward with additional modules and monitoring framework. The bundle approach ensures clinical areas are only examining processes once, while achieving outcomes relevant to each Quality Innovation Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) initiatives.
PHT have created a toolkit to assist organisations who wish to implement a care bundle approach to QIPP. Within this toolkit are practical tools which are generic and designed to use as templates for your individual organisation to adapt. These have been based on The Productive Ward.
