Awards

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust receives many awards and accolades for the services it provides, its teams, and also individual staff members.

As one of the largest acute hospital trusts in the country, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust works hard to be recognised as one of the best hospitals in England. To do this we strive to provide the best care, have the best people, and achieve the best performance. The awards and accolades below show some of these achievements and the full stories can be found on the link on the left hand side of the page:

2017:

The Haematology and Oncology Day Unit at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust was awarded a Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM) for delivering high standards of care to people affected by cancer.

2016:

Clinical service centres and corporate departments achieved the Silver Award in ‘equality, diversity and inclusion for all’

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust achieved a Silver award for ‘Sports and Physical Activity at Work’

A Trust initiative, MISSION-Asthma and COPD, was shortlisted three times for the national Health service Journal awards for work to improve lives of those with airways diseases.

The Rheumatology Department won a NRAS Healthcare Champion Award 2016, nominated by a network of members. The department received many nominations, recognised for their dedication, enthusiasm and professionalism they bring to healthcare.

The Night Radiographer Team was chosen as the Society of Radiographers, South East Region Team of the Year for 2016. The team were nominated by Gillian Simmons, Radiographer Advanced Practitioner. the award was presented to them at the House of Commons.

Claire Jeffries, lead clinical specialist physiotherapist for hydrotherapy and rheumatology and the Specialist AS Team at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, have been selected to receive Patients’ Choice Awards from the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society (NASS). 

A special initiative, launched by our Diabetes Antenatal Team, was named as a finalist at a prestigious national diabetes awards.
The initiative ‘Diabetes pregnancy care – achieving similar outcomes to non-diabetes related pregnancies’ was highly placed within the Quality in Care (QiC) Diabetes 2016 National Awards.

The Rheumatology Department at QA have won a NRAS Healthcare Champion Award 2016. Amazingly, The Rheumatology Department at QA received many nominations, being recognised for their dedication, enthusiasm and professionalism they bring to healthcare.

The Night Radiographer Team at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust was chosen as the Society of Radiographers, South East Region Team of the Year for 2016.

Queen Alexandra Hospital scored highly in the Patient-led Assessment of the Care Environment (PLACE). Overall, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust scored above the national average in seven of the eight domains. These ratings include cleanliness, food, privacy and dignity, condition appearance and maintenance , dementia and disability.

Our Diabetes Antenatal Team here at QA managed to reach the finals of the National Diabetes Quality in Care Awards, in the category of Diabetes Team Initiative of the Year 2016!

We’re delighted that Stop the Red Clocks has now been nationally recognised through being short listed for a Nursing Times Award in the Patient Safety Category. At the end of the year, the most improved areas by night were F3, C7 and C5, with F3, G2 and C5 most improved areas by day. Prizes and awards were handed out.

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust won a prestigious national award for the “impressive” work it has done to help patients with chronic respiratory conditions. The HSJ Patient Safety Award for Improving Safety in Medicines Management was presented to the Queen Alexandra Hospital team at the annual ceremony held in Manchester.

Portsmouth Hospitals MISSION COPD project, in partnership with Wessex Academic Health Science Network, was nominated for two awards in the Service support and Service redesign categories for the HSJ Value in Healthcare Awards in May.

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust was nominated for CHKS 40 top Hospitals in the UK - for the 11th time!

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust received a national award from NHS Employers in recognition of the progress it made in the Equality for NHS Employers equality and diversity partner programme. 

Our Learning and Development team were awarded the Quality Mark, a Skills for Health award that recognises outstanding healthcare training. Achieving the Quality Mark demonstrates that an organisation has met the unique quality framework for learning and training in the health sector.

The Diabetes team here at QA Hospital were short listed for the national BMJ ‘Clinical Leadership Team of the Year’ award. 

2015:

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust won a prestigious HSJ Award for our work using technology to improve patient care. We won the category of Improving Care with Technology for our work using the VitalPac system. Our diabetes team who were highly commended in the Acute, Community and/or Primary Care Services Redesign, alongside Southern Health Foundation Trust and Solent Trust.

NIHR CRN (National Institute for Health Research, Clinical Research Network) confirms PHT are the 40th highest clinical research recruiter in the country

Our wonderful Hospital at Night team bagged a prestigious national award for their work implementing an electronic task management system. Our dedicated team picked up the E-health insider award in the category ‘Best use of IT to promote patient safety’ after introducing Nervecentre, which has helped us to make significant patient safety improvements.

The Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust supply chain team, South of England Procurement Services, won the acclaim of judges at the prestigious EHI2015 awards

Winner of the HSJ Value in Healthcare Awards: Value and Improvement in the use of Diagnostics

We are published in the BMJ as we cut Norovirus outbreaks by over 90%

MISSION Severe Asthma (Modern Innovative Solutions to Improve Outcomes in Severe Asthma) wins prestigious nationalHSJ award in 'Value in Healthcare Awards: Value and Improvement in the use of Diagnostics.'

The Best Places to Work 2015 Awards, which is run by the Health Service Journal, Nursing Times and NHS Employers, recognised PHT as among the top 40 Acute Trusts nationwide.

2014:

Chair’s Award of 2014
Jacqueline Swift, DL, Chair of Health Education Wessex made this single award to an eye catching  project, which through education and training has made a stand-out contribution to improving patient and service user experience and care.

2013:

  • Four people were awarded Volunteer of the Year in PHT's volunteer awards
  • Penny Roberts and Emily Wainwright were shortlisted for Apprentice of the Year in The News Business awards
  • Mandy Grosvenor wins Mentor of the Year
  • PHT won the CHKS Top Hospitals programme patient safety award 2013
  • Bruce Taylor (Cons – ITU) received a Gold Award in the National Clinical Excellence Awards for 2012/13
  • Katie Keen was shortlisted for the Student Nursing Times’ Student Nurse of the Year Award in the children’s category
  • The Rheumatology Department was nominated as a best practice Rheumatology service model and pathway - Rheumatology exemplar hub by the British Society for Rheumatology
  • British Medical Journal team of the year award for MDHU Portsmouth staff
  • Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust shortlisted for two HSJ efficiency awards.   • The Guardian healthcare innovation awards - Diabetes award shortlist for reducing hospital admissions
  • PHT chosen for outstanding practice in the Best Practice Rheumatology Awards
  • The News Best of Health awards. PHT won Hospital Nurse/Doctor/Team/Midwife of the year
  • PHT shortlisted for the child and adolescent services category by the Nursing Times Awards

2012:

  • National accreditation for Occupational Health facilities in Portsmouth
  • Six of our teams and individual staff members won in different categories in the Best of Health Awards 2012, and many more were shortlisted or highly commended for awards.
  • Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust and Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust won the Quality in Care Awards and the Care Integration Awards 2012 for their innovative work with diabetes.
  • Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust were delighted to have been recognised by HTP Training for the apprenticeship training the Trust and were named Employer of the Year.
  • Sue Atkins from the Alcohol Nurse Specialist Team was awarded the highly commended second place position as Nurse of the Year for her work in setting up an alcohol specific department in Portsmouth.
  • Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust has been hailed as Britain’s most improved hospital for cancer treatment in a prestigious national patient experience survey run by the Department of Health.
  • Kim Carter, a venous thromboembolism (VTE) nurse specialist at Queen Alexandra Hospital, was named on the Queens birthday honours list for an MBE.
  • Royal Navy nurse Lieutenant Vicky Scott, was one of 8,000 ‘inspirational torchbearers’ who took part in the Olympic Flame torch relay as it passed through our region in the summer.

2011:

  • Our handheld vital sign monitoring and early warning system VitalPac won the NHS Excellence in Informatics Award.
  • Patient record technology using digital pens won the Best Use of Mobile Technology in the Healthcare category at the E-Health Insider Awards.
  • The Diabetes team won several national awards including Best Emergency and Inpatient Care Initiative, and Team of the Year in the Diabetes Quality in Care Awards.
  • Several of our teams and individual staff members won or were highly commended in the Best of Health Awards 2011 which is managed by The News.
  • The Emergency Department 'Butterfly scheme' (which ensures the privacy and dignity of patients who are extremely ill) won the Emergency and Critical Care category in the Nursing Times Award.
  • The Trust came second in the Research Culture category at the HSJ Awards.
  • Sarah Stapley, Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, received the 'Barclays Award for Women of the Year'.
  • The Trust’s ALERT course, which teaches  healthcare professionals how to identify and manage deteriorating patients, was shortlisted for a national Patient Safety Award.
  • The Rheumatology Nursing Team was shortlisted in the Innovation in Rheumatology and Rheumatoid Arthritis Award 2011 Nurse Awards.
  • A publication by Dr Jane Williams, Chief of Service for Elderly Care, was named the Medical-Surgical Nursing book of the year by the American Journal of Nursing.
  • We received over 10,400 plaudits from patients during the year, outweighing the number of complaints by 25 to 1.
