About Us

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust provides a range of acute services across two sites including Queen Alexandra Hospital and St Mary's Hospital.

modThe Queen Alexandra Hospital site has gone through a major redevelopment to create a modern and 'fit for purpose' hospital,  which has been completed in 2009.  This work has been done in partnership with 'The Hospital Company', a consortium of Carillion plc and the Royal Bank of Scotland. The majority of the Trust's acute services are now provided at Queen Alexandra followng the opening phase of the new state-of-the-art facilities.

The 'Emergency Department' at Queen Alexandra Hospital is one of the busiest in the UK treating in excess of 100,000 patients each year.

The 'Medical Assessment Unit' (MAU) and 'Surgical Assessment Unit' (SAU) provide rapid diagnostic assessment for patients admitted as emergencies.  These can then be directed to the clinical areas most appropriate for their condition.

The Trust is also home to the Wessex Renal and Transplant Unit and it holds prestigious Cancer Beacon Status for the Head and Neck Cancer Services.

modHosting the largest Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit (MDHU) in the country, the Trust enjoys strong military connections and is proud of this association.  This means that as a Trust, we have wider responsibilities than those of standard NHS organisations.  Military staff now account for 5% of the total workforce and the Trust has responsibility to ensure the staff have exposure to the appropriate clinical experience required during their times of deployment throughout the world.

Employee of the Month

An Employee of the Month scheme was launched in August 2010 to recognise and reward staff who have made substantial contributions to the quality of care provided to patients or have delivered exceptional levels of work performance whilst exemplifying the core values of the Trust.

All Trust staff, volunteers, honorary contract holders, PCT staff or Carillion staff working across the Trust's sites are eligible for the award.  A selection panel chooses an Employee of the Month and the winner is presented with an award and a certificate and their photograph displayed.

modThe winner of Employee of the Month award for March was Miciel Ulit, Staff Nurse, D5 Ward.  "It was bought to my attention that Michiel Ulit, Staff Nurse on D5 has potentially saved a patient's life by her prompt interventions.  On a night shift in early March, Michiel noticed that a patient had erroneously transferred their bupivacaine infusion to their cannula.  Michiel averted what may well have been a fatal outcome.  Her observation and prompt management was laudable, and therefore deserves recognition".  Michiel was nominated by Julie Sprack, Head of Nursing for MSK.
