Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust is extremely proud of its volunteers and is eternally greatful for their dedication, effort and compassion.
Our aim is to provide staff, patients and visitors with a complimentary, innovative and adaptable service that will enhance the services already provided by the Trust. We endeavor to monitor, maintain and support existing services while identifying any areas of unmet need.
How to Become a Volunteer
To become a volunteer you need to complete an application form, and we will then ask for references. You will also be required to attend for a short informal interview, complete a health declaration form, and a CRB check for some voluntary roles within the hospital. Due to the increasing popularity of volunteering, and particularly within the hospital environment, it is taking approximately at least three months for applications to work their way through this process. The most popular requests for voluntary placements are on our maternity and paediatric wards, and so opportunities are more limited in these areas.
Volunteers are required to commit to at least one session per week (3-4 hours) for at least six months.
Volunteering is a partnership. The Trust is committed to provided all volunteers with the experience, motivation and inspiration they are seeking, in return to assisting us in enhancing our patient experience. Volunteers will also be valued by the Trust, are very much part of the hospital team, and complement the work that our staff do.

Long gone are the days when being in a clinical trial sparked fear. At Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, patients are given opportunities to take part in clinical trials, in fact when asked, over 90% of patients believe that others should be offered a clinical trial. They are a vital part of learning more about both health and illness, and aim towards making progress for the future.
