Volunteers and Fundraising

From helping our patients, to navigating our hospital buildings, to delivering information leaflets and helping feed patients, our Trust is proud of its very valued volunteers.

We continue to be immensely grateful to the 800 men and women, of all ages and backgrounds, who give their time so selflessly to provide non-clinical support to our patients, staff and visitors. Their contribution supports and enhances the services of the hospital.

The Trust welcomes volunteers from the age of 16 upward and we believe that everyone has something to give, regardless of how much time is given. There has been a significant increase in the number of younger people who are giving their time to help others in our hospitals. Often volunteering is a useful way to gain experience of a particular job, with a view to future career choices.

Some of the roles volunteers are involved in include:
  • Helping on the wards and in clinics
  • Clerical helpers
  • Running shops and cafes
  • Fundraising
  • Patient Library Service
  • Hospital Radio
  • Hospital guides

There are many fundraising activities that take place throughout the Trust. We have our own charitable fund - The Rocky Appeal that aims to raise funds for a new suite of highly technical operating theatres for 'keyhole surgery'. The League of Friends runs its own cafe at Queen Alexandra Hospital and aims to provide care, equipment and comfort for patients, staff and relatives.

Many other generous companies, organisations and individuals also fundraise for specific specialties within the Trust and we appreciate all their efforts.

Work Experience

Please be advised that if you looking for a work experience opportunity within Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, you need to make contact directly with your chosen department.  Voluntary Services does not organise work experience placements.  Please also bear in mind that there are some age restrictions in some areas of the hospital.
