New Rocky Appeal and Forthcoming Rocky Events

As you know, I try to find for each appeal, something that under normal circumstances we would not have access to in our area.  We now have the go ahead for something which I am sure you may well like to support in the future.  This exciting new method of keyhole surgery is known as Laparoscopic Endoscopy Surgery and the new Rocky Appeal has been launched to raise £3 million to create a suite of highly technical operating theatres providing advanced keyhole surgery.

These theatres, known as “endotheatres” are currently available in only a few specialist hospitals in the United Kingdom. They provide built-in high definition, safer, more efficient and advanced “keyhole” surgery, and it is hoped to set up these new theatres at QAH.

These theatres are now commonplace in Europe and the USA. Laparoscopic endoscopic surgery, commonly known as keyhole surgery, is minimally invasive and uses small incisions as opposed to a long surgical wound. A clinician can safely undertake more complex operations such as cancer surgery, using this method.

The advantages of keyhole surgery are well known and will result in immediate benefit to patients, including less pain, a smaller scar, faster recovery and quicker return to work and family life. We have already seen this in gallbladder and hernia operations, and we will be able to extend this to, for example, cancer, colorectal, gynaecology and urology, to name but a few. In addition, there could be video linkage to conference facilities for training purposes, to allow us to become a teaching centre for advanced keyhole surgery.

Although the equipment for these theatres is very expensive, if we wish to be at the forefront with this space age treatment this would put us in a strong position to be one of those few hospitals in the United Kingdom with the capability of offering such specialised treatment for patients in their time of need.

To achieve this aim we will  need to raise £3MILLION to allow us to provide these theatres.  We will need all the help possible to be able to raise this large amount of money so that we can provide this tremendous advance in hospital treatment.

 VOLUNTEERS ALWAYS NEEDED!

How about becoming a volunteer on our Rocky Appeal Stall,

which is situated in the main entrance of the hospital.

(The shifts worked are half a day, with change-over of volunteers at 1pm, with four people per shift.

An identification badge and FREE parking is provided for all volunteers)

We need people to join our happy team and help to sell our range of items to the many people who come into the hospital each day.

Most of our volunteers are senior citizens, and some of them have been with us for many years, some as long as nineteen!

Age is no barrier, young and old alike, We need your help.  Why not give it a try, come along for a chat and a look around.

Due to the retirement of several of our volunteers WE URGENTLY NEED people for all am/pm shifts.

Why not give this some thought, and if you are interested in sparing us 4 hours a week then please contact Mick Lyons on 023 9228 6487 (e-mail audrey.buckner@porthosp.nhs.uk)

If you shop online why not help the Rocky Appeal at the same time!

Look at http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/rockyappeal to see full details.  Our page is found under Portsmouth Hospitals Rocky Appeal.

You simply shop online as normal (but go via the fundraising website) and do not pay a penny extra for your transaction, but the appeal benefits.

Once you have registered your chosen charity as The Rocky Appeal then the retailers donate a percentage of each of your transactions to the appeal.

It's as simple as that!  Many retailers offer money to the appeal just for your looking at their site.

Why not try it, you might bag a bargain at the same time.
