The League of Friends
The League of Friends is a volunteer group raising money for Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.
On 8 October 1952, 80 people got together and founded the League of Friends at Queen Alexandra Hospital.
Since then it has only had five chairmen and has seen its number of volunteers grow to more than 400.
Having raised and donated about £1.6 million to the hospital the group is now gaining most of its revenue through the League of Friends shop on Level B in Queen Alexandra Hospital, next to the Oncology outpatient area.
The volunteers have been nationally recognised in several areas, the latest being given an award for giving the largest number of hours in the shop and three trolley services it runs.
The volunteers are to be found serving in the shop - both café and retail – running three trolley services a day, holding an art group, and a visiting team. Volunteers are constantly required especially if the service is to expand.
Social events are also held three times a year, along with a long weekend outing and a magazine is published.

Have you ever thought about being on a clinical trial
Long gone are the days when being in a clinical trial sparked fear. At Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, patients are given opportunities to take part in clinical trials, in fact when asked, over 90% of patients believe that others should be offered a clinical trial. They are a vital part of learning more about both health and illness, and aim towards making progress for the future.
