Brett is a Chartered Accountant and a former regional Managing Partner of Ernst & Young and Chairman of Southampton Cargo Handling Ltd.

His public sector roles have included, Member of the Council of Southampton University,  Governor of Southampton Solent University  (formerly Southampton Institute) and Chair of its Audit committee, Trustee of Wessex Medical Research Trust, President of Southampton & Fareham Chamber of Commerce.
