Membership

The members of an NHS Foundation Trust can make a real difference.  Becoming a member will give you an opportunity to become involved, share your views and have a say in the way the hospital is run. 

There are two types of members: patient or public members (including carers) and staff members. All members of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust receive regular information about the Trust through the publication Trust Matters and invited to member events including discussions groups and health seminars. Members can also chose to stand for election as a public governor of the Council of Governors.

Portsmouth Hospitals currently has nearly 10,000 members but we want more people from all walks of life to be part of the Trust's future.

Who can become a member?

• Anyone aged 14 and over living in the Trust's catchment area:
  Portsmouth City – the electoral area covered by Portsmouth City Council
  East Hampshire – the electoral areas covered by Havant Borough Council and East Hampshire District Council
  Fareham & Gosport – the electoral areas covered by Fareham Borough Council and Gosport Borough Council
  
• A patient or their carer, who has been treated by the Trust

You can be a Member of more than one Foundation Trust providing you meet the eligibility criteria for each separate Trust.

What is it like to be a member?

Ernie Wells has been a member of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust for two years and continues to greatly enjoy being one of the nearly ten thousand members the Trust currently has.

 “I would recommend becoming a member of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust as it has massively increased my knowledge of the mechanisms of the Trust. It also provides me with an opportunity to contribute any thoughts or ideas I may have on the way the hospital is run.”

An engineer by trade, Mr Wells became increasingly interested in the human body as a machine which sparked an interest in the health sector, and he saw an opportunity to further increase his knowledge of the local NHS by becoming a Trust member.

Mr Wells said, “I find being a member of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust to be very enjoyable. We receive regular information from the Trust about its past, present and future actions which enables me to understand more about the hospital and the people in it. It is incredibly interesting to learn more about occupations, both clinical and non-clinical, that often come under public scrutiny and see how hard staff in the Trust work and how unfair a large amount of this criticism is.”
