Dermatology open day 2011

Hundreds of people took the rare opportunity to go behind-the-scenes of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust’s Dermatology Department at a special open day.

The event offered people an insight into what services the department offers as well as take advantage of skin cancer screening facilities and advice on sun protection.

More than 200 people attended the event, of which 105 people had their skin checked, 17 of who were advised to get GP referrals relating to potential skin conditions.

Doctors and nurses gave talks about common skin conditions throughout the day, which were very well attended and were on hand to answer any questions.

This was the first open day that the Dermatology Department, which is one of the Trust’s services based at St Mary’s Hospital.

Organiser Sam Hunt, Consultant Dermatologist, was delighted with the turn out.

She said: “It has been a fantastic success with an even better turn out. All the feedback we have had has been very positive.

“Skin care is extremely important, especially in the summer months, so we wanted to hold an event that educated the community and gave people the opportunity to come and find out more and speak to one of our team. We are thrilled with how the event has gone and hope that it is the first of many.”
