Queen Alexandra Hospital marks Armistice Day
Staff at Queen Alexandra Hospital observed a two-minute silence on Friday 11 November to commemorate Armistice Day.
The Trust has a long standing relationship with the armed forces;QueenAlexandraHospitalfirst opened as a military hospital and is proud to host the largest Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit (MDHU) in the country.
Military staff who account for 5% of the Trust’s workforce, work alongside their NHS colleagues bringing a wealth of experience and skills which hugely benefit our patients.
To pay tribute to all military personnel, small gatherings took place across the hospital, involving patients, visitors and staff, at 11am where a two-minute silence was observed.
Members of the Trust Board and senior military personnel from the MDHU laid a wreath in the Main Entrance of the hospital and stood together in silence to mark the day of respect.
Ursula Ward, Chief Executive of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “Wearing a poppy is a symbol of remembrance to those who bravely sacrificed their lives to give us the way of life we have today and I am very proud to have taken part in our two-minute silence today. But we do not just remember the two world wars; we remember those who are currently serving in our armed forces, which for me is very important as we have a strong military presence at the hospital.
“We are very proud to have the experience and expertise of our Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit (MDHU) staff working with us to provide the highest standard of care for our patients. Our military and civilian members of staff work closely together bringing different areas of experience and different skills set for the benefit of our patients.”
Commanding Officer, MDHU Portsmouth, Wing Commander Steve Beaumont, added: “Within MDHU Portsmouth our thoughts are with all our deployed military personnel delivering health care on operations. Today was a great opportunity to share this act of Remembrance with our civilian colleagues whom we work alongside in the NHS.”

| Lest we forget |
Long gone are the days when being in a clinical trial sparked fear. At Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, patients are given opportunities to take part in clinical trials, in fact when asked, over 90% of patients believe that others should be offered a clinical trial. They are a vital part of learning more about both health and illness, and aim towards making progress for the future.
