Strontium-89 for Bone Pain

Strontium-89 chloride is used to relieve bone pain in prostate cancer patients. It is administered as an injection, and localises selectively in bone, particularly in cells that are dividing rapidly. Areas of bone with metastases therefore accumulate greater concentrations of strontium-89 than healthy bone and tissue, so the therapy is delivered to the site where it is needed. The treatment takes effect over a couple of weeks and pain relief can last from three to six months, although patient responses do vary. You will be treated as an out-patient in Oncology day unit by the member of Oncology and nuclear medicine physics team.
