Welcome to Medical Physics Department

2012 RPS(X-ray) course now open for booking !!!

The Portsmouth Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering department provides specialist scientific, technical and engineering services to most clinical services within Portsmouth Hospitals, local PCTs and other healthcare providers. We provide full scientific and technical support for the safe introduction and use of new imaging, treatment and clinical modalities.

We provide a direct access bone densitometry service and non-imaging diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in support of cancer and other therapies. Our clinical training team provide medical devices training to users of medical devices across all clinical disciplines and grades. Our engineering team support a comprehensive range of medical equipment throughout secondary and primary care, helping to advance and keep clinical services running.

Research activities are undertaken in radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, imaging and in support of developing techniques as part of portfolio studies. We have collaborative agreements with the University of Portsmouth, Surrey University and developing links with UCL.

Our teaching commitments include MSc’s, PhD by research, FRCR and Imaging Physics. Our scientists are encouraged to publish and present their work at national and international conferences. We also organise short courses from time to time, for example, for Radiation Protection Supervisors, radiation protection in dentistry. We also contribute to clinical courses and study days, e.g International Laryngeal Laser course.

We are accredited by IPEM as a training centre with a long established track record in training clinical scientists, and more recently clinical engineers and healthcare scientists. Training and development are key priorities for us.

If you have an unmet clinical scientific, technical or engineering need, a problem that needs an innovative solution, then there will be someone here who may be able to help.
